Safaricom Boosts Internet Speeds to Counter Starlink's Rising Popularity in Kenya

#infrastructure

In a bold move to stay ahead of the competition, Safaricom has doubled its internet speeds to match Starlink’s growing presence in Kenya’s broadband market. The revamped packages offer faster, more reliable connections at competitive prices, providing a stronger option for both consumers and businesses. Could this be the start of a fierce battle for Kenya’s internet dominance?

Safaricom, Kenya's top mobile operator, has upgraded its fibre internet packages in response to Starlink's rapid growth in the Kenyan broadband market. Customers can now enjoy faster internet speeds, with packages ranging from 15 Mbps to 500 Mbps at competitive prices. Additionally, Safaricom has launched Kenya’s first gigabit-speed plan offering 1 Gbps for KES 20,000 ($155), aiming to provide premium options for high-demand users.

  • The 15 Mbps plan is now priced at KES 3,000 ($23)
  • The 30 Mbps plan replaces the former 20 Mbps option
  • Users on the 80 Mbps plan now enjoy doubled speeds from the 40 Mbps package
  • The top-tier 500 Mbps plan is priced at KES 12,500 ($97)

Safaricom has also rolled out a Family Share Plan, bundling mobile voice, data, SMS, and home internet for up to five members with a 20% discount. This expansion comes as a direct response to Starlink, which entered Kenya in June 2023 and quickly attracted over 4,000 customers with its 200 Mbps speeds at KES 6,500 ($50). Starlink also offers a 50 GB package at KES 1,300 and a rental option for the Starlink kit, priced at KES 45,000.

Safaricom's CEO, Peter Ndegwa, stated that the enhanced speeds aim to meet growing demand, with further plans to expand coverage to homes outside of fibre reach via 4G and 5G options. The battle for broadband dominance in Kenya heats up, with Safaricom also pushing for regulatory action against independent satellite providers, including Starlink, to limit competition.

💡 Key Takeaways:

  • Faster Internet: Safaricom doubles internet speeds in response to Starlink’s competition.
  • Competitive Prices: Plans range from KES 3,000 ($23) to KES 20,000 ($155) for gigabit speeds.
  • Family Share Plan: Bundled services with up to 20% discounts.
  • Broadband Battle: Safaricom vs. Starlink—who will dominate Kenya’s internet market?

🌍 This is a turning point for Kenya’s broadband landscape, as Starlink and Safaricom go head-to-head in the race to offer the best internet service for homes and businesses.
