As part of the acquisition, Qala rebrands as the ₿trust Builders Programme and aims to drive the development and education across the Global South. ₿trust, a non-profit organization funded by Twitter (now X) co-founder and Bitcoin BTC tickers down $25,713 advocate Jack Dorsey, is scaling up its programs in Africa with a new acquisition.

Jack Dorsey's ₿trust, a non-profit organization funded by the co-founder of Twitter and Bitcoin advocate, has acquired Qala, an African organization dedicated to training Bitcoin and Lightning engineers. Qala will now be rebranded as the ₿trust Builders Programme. This acquisition aims to advance the development and education of Bitcoin open-source engineers from the Global South. 


Qala, founded in 2021, has been instrumental in sourcing, training, and matching African software developers with global Bitcoin firms. It has built a large online community of Bitcoin developers across 42 African countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda. Qala's alumni have secured positions at notable Bitcoin-related companies and received open-source grants from ₿trust and Superlunar.


As part of the acquisition, Qala's CEO Femi Longe and program manager Stephanie Titcombe will join ₿trust as program leads at ₿trust Builders. This move underscores ₿trust's commitment to supporting Bitcoin development worldwide, with a focus on regions like Africa and India.


Jack Dorsey founded ₿trust in February 2021, with an initial focus on funding Bitcoin development teams in Africa and India. The organization was initially funded by Jay-Z, the crypto-friendly artist and producer. Today, it is led by a board of directors, including Abubakar Nur Khalil, Carla Kirk-Cohen, Obi Nwosu, and Ochai.
